The Rotary Club of Raniganj was chartered on November 4, 1970, with Rtn. V. V. Philip as the first president and Rtn. G. N. Bhatnagar as the secretary. The charter was officially presented on February 17, 1971, by PDG Rtn. P. N. Mukherjee, acting Governor of District 329, to PP Rtn. Brig A. K. Sahukar, AVSM. The club adopted its constitution and bylaws on March 3, 1971. The Rotary International-approved territorial limit for the club, defined on June 29, 1972, included the areas of Raniganj and Jamuria, within the Asansol Sub-Division. The club’s first project was the establishment of a Homeopathic Dispensary, inaugurated on September 5, 1971, by renowned homeopath Dr. Parimal Banerjee at the residence of Late Rtn. M. K. Saraf. The club’s flag was designed by Rtn. Brig. A. K. Sahukar, AVSM, and approved in December 1970. The flag’s white background with the Rotary wheel featured four colored strips representing the main industries and activities in the club’s region: • Green for paddy fields • Black for the coal industry • Aluminium for the aluminum industry • Light brown for the sand used in glass factories and coal mines The club’s bulletin, initially called "ROTA-RANI," was first published in June 1970. It was later renamed "PRERANA" by the late S.S. Bhartia, a former Rotarian. In the early years, the club faced difficult times after coal nationalization in 1973, leaving only six members and no permanent meeting place. Despite these challenges, the club remained active, meeting in rotation at members’ workplaces, with special permission from Rotary International to continue with such a small roster. In 1978, the club initiated the "Child Institute" project. Eight Rotarians pooled Rs. 4,000 to purchase land for the institute, which was later named the "Smt Kalawati Devi Jhunjhunwala Rotary Child Institute" in honor of a generous donation from Smt. Kalawati Devi Jhunjhunwala, mother of PP Rtn. S. K. Jhunjhunwala. Over the years, additional contributions were made, including a donation of Rs. 31,000 from Late Krishnagopal Jhunjhunwala in 1995, during the club’s silver jubilee year, for the construction of a Silver Jubilee Hall. Throughout its history, the club has been known for its strong fellowship.
